Excursion program

Wednesday, 11 June:

9:00 - 12:00 Drive to Salez, Switzerland

13:00 - 17:00 Salez and Frümsen

  • RhyTOP company
    • Breeding of Schwefelbohne (Heirloom common bean variety), Introgression of bush bean for plant stability)
    • Breeding of Rheintaler Ribelmais landrace: S1 Line tests, haploids and doubled haploids trials
    • Swiss primary collection of walnuts in Frümsen
  • Agricultural Center St. Gallen, LZSG,
    • Grapevine collection in Frümsen
    • Potato breeding
    • Additional experiments if time permits

17:30 Drive to Schaan

Thursday, 12 June:

9:00-12:00: Lubera breeding company, Buchs

  • Fruit breeding (e.g., Rubus, seedless apple)
  • Breeding methods (e.g., interspecific crosses for fruits and vegetables
  • Resistance breeding (Potatoes and fruits)

12:00-13:00: Drive to Wädenswil

13:00-16:00: Agroscope Wädenswil

  • Apple genetic resources and breeding
  • General information on public agricultural research in Switzerland

17:00-18:00: Drive to Berne

Friday, 13 June:

9:00-12:00: DSP Delley seeds and plants Ltd, Delley, Switzerland

  • Maize and wheat breeding
  • Public-private cooperation in plant breeding

13:00 Return to Stuttgart

Reimbursement policy:

Please not that you can not be reimbursed if you can’t participate in the excursion as we have to use the funds for the financially binding reservations.

Additional information

EU students: Bring your national ID card or a passport.

Non-EU students: - Bring your passport with a valid Schengen visum - Your passport needs to be valid for an additional 3 months - Bring your certificate of immatriculation!

  • Food: Bring your own lunch for the first day, for the remaining days, we will decide spontaneously where to eat.
  • In the evenings we will explore Vaduz, the capital of Liechtenstein, and Berne, the capital of Switzerland
  • As we pass some beautiful mountain lakes (e.g., Walensee, Zürichsee, Neuenburgsee) and may have time for a break, you could bring your swimming gear if you want to go swimming.
  • Bring shoes with which you are comfortable walking with. Then we can decide on some nice walks if time permits.
  • Bring your own towel for the youth hostels.
  • No alcohol is allowed on the car (we have had our experiences ;-) )
